I am sitting in my apartment, really getting down with some italian verb congugations when I hear the most passionate, most italian two words shouted from the floor above us.
"MAMMA MIA!"
Sorella Bair (who was in another room) acknowledged that she indeed had heard it too. We both laughed..."Where are we?" The funniest thing is that it was real emotion...this wasnt just silly little Mario from Mario Cart who forgot to climb up a ladder. IT WAS REAL LIFE. I live in MARIO CART.
Another great week. It was SUCH a gift to talk to and see the familys faces! Everyone looks so beautiful.. especially that belly Kenny!! and KATE is all grown up.
Before our skype session, our district was invited to a Christmas feast at the Rochiras. They invited family and several families for the ward. We ate lots of food, listened to American christmas music, watched the children open their presents, watched the children do Wii Dance. Opening presents was the most interesting thing... The presents arent even marked. They are pretty much torn up and up for grabs. Magically, everyone knows whose present goes to who. Christmas miracle.
There is the cutest set of italian twin girls (Daphne and Phoebe). I told one of them that I have a twin sister. She quickly responded, "Ma CHE BELLO!" (BUT HOW BEAUTIFUL!) (I wish so badly that I could recite exactly how she said it. She said it like a typical italian-with so much passion in her voice. (a little 10 yr old girl). Everyone is so intrigued when they find out I have a twin serving RUSSIA. Liv, I found some russian church pamphlets in our apartment the other day. Liv, what even is russian?
There was a baptism this week. A father and son (the elders investigators). It was so HAPPY, except a lot of people did show up. The closing hymn was the Spirit of God. Sorella Bair whispered, "SING LOUD". (so as to seem like there were more people than it seemed). Being sick with a cold, I tried the best I could. We struggled to get through the last verse, with this hymn being the highest and longest in the hymn book. Moral of the story: elders, get more members to come to baptisms:)
We taught a family this week! There is a sweet exchange student in our ward from the US, so we arranged for us to come teach her host family. They invited us for pranzo. It was by far the biggest pranzo of my life. There are some days when I feel like I really wont make it through a meal (if you know what I mean).. .lots of prayers said. This was one of those days. But, we survived, shared a message on the family. They invited us back. They are golden and kind and intellectual!
Transfer calls are this week....stay tuned. Im thinking itll be another in Catania. We will see:)
Sorella Bair and I have been studying more about the Holy Ghost and how key it is to conversion. I found a great scripture:
"That which is of God is light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day." D&C 50:24
So eloquent and beautifully said. Study and ponder the scriptures. Feast upon them. They will bless your life so much! I know that the scriptures are the words of God.
BUON CAPODANNO!! Own those new years goals!
love,
Sister Clyde

Buon Natale!!!!
Catania is beautiful! Italians are the most kind, caring people. I am still working on that book of beautiful italian services.
Another to add to the list: Sorella BAir and I were in a hurry to buy balloons and decorate for our departing sister, Sorella Fuller last week. We ran into the shop below our house in search for balloons and how to say balloon in italian. Once the store owner found them for us, I readied myself to pay. Without hestitating, he responded "La prossima volta!" ("next time" you can pay) and we were off running for the church. What kindness!
Its really funny to see the cultural differences and accent differences among italians. One day Sorella Bair had a conversation with a stranger:
Sorella BAir: "Are you Italian?"
Stranger: "No! Im Sicilian"
Haha he was dead serious. I guess Im not techinically in Italy:)
There was a baptism on Saturday! It wasnt a convert baptism but the missionaries helped out with it. It was really neat to witness a baptism with the perspective of a missionary. Wow, what a beautiful step in life to see someone come into the waters of baptism with someone holding the priesthood authority of God. Baptism truly is part of the plan and it is how we become children of Christ. It is a rebirth through Him. And we have the opportunity to renew this covenant every week as we partake of the Sacrament. Do as Christ would do each day. Its easy for us to remember during this holiday season but it is so important that we always remember Him! He lives. His Atonement is real!
Love you all! Merry Christmas!
See you soon fam!

Mount Etna Still Lives
Italians are such warm wonderful trusting people! I told Sorella Bair that I want to make a book of all the out of the norm things that Italians do compared to Americans. For example, when you buy something at the store and the cashier doesnt have enough change, he will confidentally ask another customer in line for change and they immediately search through their wallets. Another one was when I bought my bandage at the pharmacy and they didnt understand what I was trying to explain, so I suggested that they search for it on the computer. Without question, they made Sorella Bair and me come BEHIND the counter to use their computer. (A PHARMACY COUNTER). Haha I feel like you would get shot or something if that happened in the states.
So many funny things this last week. One story that stands out was on Saturday morning. I did an exchange with a sister living in Siracusa (a beautiful quaint little town about an hour south of Catania). One of our appointments was with a lonely woman ward member. Sorella Baker gave me a debriefing before we went into the house of what might happen. Well it all happened, alright. When she realized that I was a new sorella, she asked for my name. "Sorella Clyde" was my response. She responded however with: "Whats your first name?" "Samantha but I go by Sorella Clyde" And then the woman: "Sorella Samantha. that is much easier to say." Then she proceeded to pray for me as Sorella Samantha in her prayer. Interesting. Sometimes we like to sing hymns during our visits, so when Sorella Baker offered the sing, the woman insisted on singing a solo. The First Noel. I have to say, I have heard anyone put so much passion into The First Noel (Natal Natal) as much as this woman did that morning. In fact, she kept messing up on the melody so she would start from the top. First verse: heard three times. Aw yeah. Also, during her prayer she dedicated the hymn to me "Sorella Samantha". It was an interesting visit. What a kind woman.
We went caroling to a Casa di Cura (nursing home) last week as a district. It was so happy! Oh my goodness, we all felt on top of the world after that visit. The old women were so shocked and touched that a group of us would come sing to them. I dont think caroling is a common occurence outside the states. It was the most touching moment to see these old, lonely women singing along, giving us a standing ovation at the end of each song, and there was even a sweet woman in the back in her bed- singing EVERY word while wiping the tears from her eyes. We gave out pass a long cards with a picture of Jesus on them. One of the women kissed the picture when I gave it to her. The casa di cura worker wants us to come back to read the book of mormon with her. WOW.
We had another golden lesson with Enzo, the bus driver. Wow. He is so great and ready to go. I really felt the Spirit guiding us throughout the lesson and he ending with a golden prayer. Luigi Sinatra is another favorite (and its not just the fact that he is probably a relative of Frank Sinatra). He is really excited to keep learning and when he gave the closing prayer he thanked Heavenly Father that he met us at a bus stop one day. HOW SWEET. Sorella Amato is our member friend connection with him. MEMBER FRIENDS are so key. In fact, our bishop actually told us to stop doing finding and instead to go to member houses to get referrals. (pretty sure the prophets counsel to find is above bishops, but he has made such a great point!) Members are the key to missionary work!
Luigi Sinatra looked at my nametag at one point and said, "Sorella Clyde. Dove Bonnie?" (Wheres Bonnie). My response: "No so ancora" (I dont know yet). Ohhh italians.
We also had a lesson with Agata. She is definitely an interestingly happy woman. At one point Sorella Bair told her that God thinks of her as a principessa (princess) and she was very excited by this: "OH wow! Thats so funny. My father used to call me a princess when I was little!" Haha. Pretty sure if we keep calling her a princess she will get baptized.
Glory to God in the highest. Peace on earth goodwill to men. This is such a beautiful time of the year to give the gift of the gospel. It is the greatest gift that we can give. I know that Jesus Christ lives. He loves us so much that He suffered and died for us. Let us strive to be like our Savior especially during this Christmas season and touch someones life with the gospel, with our love.
Merry Christmas!

Ohhhh Catania...
Not much time to write!!!
Maria Grazia is the most interesting woman in the world. She will happily agree to come to church with us or an activity and then 20 minutes later we will receive long winded text messages with absolutely no punctuation saying how she loves us a lot but she cannot come to the activity. WELL what do you know... she wanted to come to church last week. I had to sit next to her in sacrament meetting while the whole time she told me that she doesnt want to come back to church anymore. Hmmm.
We had pranzo with Sorella Seminara last week (the four sisters). She fed us a wonderful meal. I guess she noticed that I was sniffling at one point (yes, I have a cold) and then later she saw me yawn (sometimes Im tired:) and she saw the light jacket I had on and offered for me to have one of her coats. She made me put it on and everything. So she pretty much forced this big, heavy winter coat on me (italians are whimps when it comes to the cold) and she got more and more excited about, the longer I let it go on with her adjusting... (folding the sleeves) " Oh look, theeres even a strap!". Sorella Fuller saved me when she pretty much lied to get me out of it. These are such trials for me because I cant understand everything they are saying and I dont want to offend them, so I usually end up eating more food than everyone or accepting huge winter russian coats that I dont want. When Sorella Fuller told her that I acutally have a winter coat of my own at home, I responded " Si si si si!" and Sor Seminara (this talkative loud italian woman) responded "Non e vero" (That is not true!) HAhaha We died laughing. Sorella BAir filmed it and everything.
So many look a likes here. I swear Richard Gear was our bus driver today.
We taught a man named Luigi Sinatra. HOW COOL IS THAT!? He is the sweetest man in the world and we have a follow up lesson with him tomorrow! We are so excited about him. Dont worry, I asked him if he is related to Frank Sintara and hes not:(
We visited Sorella Maiori last night. She played Ricky Martin music on her keyboard piano for us as we departed her house(after a sweet spiritual lesson) hahha. It was the best and really weird.
We went to Sigonella yesterday and there was a sweet itlian family there. GUESS WHAT I translated or attempted to translate for the sweet primary kids. It was so sweet. They would correct me if I said sometthing wrong. We all laughed at my mistakes. IT was really good.
We got a new ward mission leader this week. Fratello Bruno. He is amazing!!! It was so funny because our previous ward mission leader came to Corellation last week. Throughout the whole meeting, all 8 missionraies happen to notice our old mission leader caught sketching flowers and vases on his paper while Fratello Bruno was totally owning the meeting with all his ideas. So ironic. We are really excited about it!!
The work is beautiful and great. I have been thinking about the Christmas season recently and how it interesting it is that the older you get, the less value presents have. I recently came across 1 John 4:7-9 and Moroni 7:48. Christ like love. That is what this time of year is all of about . Put on the character of Christ this Christmas. There is so much that we can do!
Thank you for your letters emails!
And in case I dont see you,
Good afternoon
Good evening
and Goodnight
Love,
Sorella Clyde

Nuns are real
We helped out at a homeless shelter last week with a bunch of Americans. It was a shelter run by the catholic church. They fed them a Thanksgiving meal; it was really great to see the reactions of all the kids each open up a christmas gift. They were all so cute. There were also a couple Italian nuns running around. I felt like I was in the Sound of Music. Dont worry, we took pictures with them. Elder Hatch was asked to give the prayer- which was a bit ironic since we were at a catholic function haha. As he gave the prayer, there continued to be camera flashes and one of the nuns continued to have a loud phone call. When the prayer ended, Sorella Bair and I opened our eyes to find everyone standing the room. Interesante...
I conducted the activity at District meeting last week. I talked about how we could be more effective about receiving referrals from the ward members. I totally incorporated the Blodgett-Higgins technique with the paper chain of links and rap idea (although I didnt rap for them, Sorella BAir and I seriously considering making one up. She is a mean beat-boxer).
The idea is that every family is given a chain of links and everytime someone in the family invites someone to an activity and or invites someone to talk to the missionaries, they rip a link off. Once every link is gone, the missionaries give a prize to the family! We even demonstrated it for the district: Sorella Bair and I did short and sweet roleplay of how the chain of links technique worked. She pretended to be the member and me, the missionary.
Me: How are you?
member: Great! I talked my friend about the church today!
Me: Yay (hands the paper chain to her)
Member: rips one link off
Haha everyone loved it. We then roleplayed member referral invites.
Members are so effective in this missionary work! I found an awesome quote in Preach my gospel by President Benson: *Memer-missionary work is one of the great keys to the individual growth of our members. It is my conviction that member missionary work will raise the spirituality in any ward where applied*
What a powerful, true statement! The Short Hills Ward really thrived and grew stronger! Keep inviting:)
The italian men are interesting. The other day, sorella BAir and I were stopped by man with his arms wide open (as if he was giving us a hug) and he said, *Siete bellisime!* (you are beautiful!) A total stranger.
I love teaching english course! Our students love us too! We taught them about restaurant words last week. When we were teaching action words, it was my turn to teach the word *to eat*. The first question that came out was *Giuseppe, do you eat food?* and the funniest thing is that when we speak, we have to speak very slowly. Haha, lets hope he eats food. OH we tried out an awesome teaching technique for english course. We usually will share a spiritual thought at the end of the lesson-just a scripture and sharing of testimony. This time, we handed out pieces of paper and had each of them secretively write a question of their own about the Mormon church or about religion in general. We received some awesome questions! Like: how is mormon church different from the Catholic church? or do you believe in life after death? SUCH GOLDEN QUESTIONS. Each time, we will pick a question to answer!
I love being a missionary. I have been studying the gospel of Jesus Christ lately and came across 3 Nephi 27. The gospel of Jesus Christ is simply to become like Christ. We must put on the character of Christ, by following him and obeying His commandments and then *we will be lifted up on high*. There are such beautiful promises given to those who follow Him.
Have a wonderful week!
Love,
Sister Clyde

Bonnie and Clyde
Mi chiamo Sorella Clyde...come Bonnie and Clyde. This is the latest introduction of myself. Bonnie and Clyde seems to be pretty well known around here. I get lots of laughs when I do so. Haha
Still stickin around Catania for the holidays!! Another transfer with Sorella Bair. Another crazy week! Catania is BEAUTIFUL! I love it here! When we go to the military base in Sigonella we get a chance to see Mount Etna (the volcano) which by the way erupted the other day (you should google it). Apparently it made the world news. It was so funny. Sorella Bair and I took a silly little photoshoot in front of the huge smoke coming out of the top the other day....later that night we got a call from President Waddoups asking if everything was okay in Catania and that Mt Etna made world news. SO COOL. We laugh and feel so dumb when we look at those pics. Anyway, the landscape is beautiful on the way to Sigonella (its nice to get out of the city) It feels like California! Orange groves and fields, beauitful sunsets! ITS FINALLY FALL like weather. Christmas decorations are starting to go up everywhere. Its definitely getting chilly!
ITALIAN LOVES: Pistacchio everything: gelato flavor, pizza flavor, pistachio on cannolli, just plain pistachhio. ALSO. Nutella. Did you know nutella is italian? AND IT IS EVERYWHERE. They even sell it in GIANT gallon size jars. Its awesome. French toast or crepes with bananas and nutella. Do it.
People know who we are. It is the coolest thing. When we hopped on a random bus the other day, the bus driver made me come over with the wave of his hand. He asked for a book of mormon. WHAT? Coolest thing ever that he wanted one and even cooler that I could communicate with him. The language is coming.
We had lunch with a woman Sorella Salemi last saturday. She was this funny little sassy short italian woman who shuffles her feet as she walks. She had to stop in the grocery store before our pranzo with her. Sorella BAir and I laughed as we realized this funny, *Where are we?* italy-mission moment when we realized that we were in a random grocery store in italy following this funny little woman around. We felt like her daughters. At one point Sorella Bair took a phone call (transfer calls) and I was stuck listening to this woman trying to make decisions and ask for advice. Turns out, I wasnt getting everything she was saying.... She finally said, "You dont understand, do you?" Thats when I just completely broke down into laughter. WHERE AM I? I responded "Sto provando di capire!" (Im trying to understand!) as Sorella BAir laughed at me. Its the comprehension part that gets me. The speaking is going well though:)
Sorella Salemi fed us lunch. At one point she asked me to pass the plates "Piatti?" and I took it as "Piena?" (are you full?) In order to avoid any hurt feelings or contention missionaries always respond with an Of course not (when really they feel like they could possibly die inside) so I responded with "NO!" It was definitely a firm NO. Hahah we laughed and I passed the plates. Sto provando. Sto provando.
This woman sped to help us catch our train in time. The whole time she was saying "Ce la facciamo. Ce la facciamo. Ce la facciamo" (We can do it. We can do. We can do it.) It was the funniest thing. You try saying that ten times fast.
We stand out like soar thumbs here. It is the funniest thing. We really are the minority. We were waiting in the post office the other day and every customer that came in did a double take to look at us. HAHA. Also, some workmen told us "That American girls are the most beautiful girls in the world" Why cant we get compliments like that in the states?? Hahha:)
The italian language is beautiful. The way they say things is just so beautiful and profound. We went to sigonella church yesterday (after italian church) with an italian. An american woman wanted to communicate with him so she made one of the elders translate. It was the sweetest thing to behold as she paid his some compliments. She just told him how he is such a strong member to live in Italy where there arent very many members. She was feeling silly that she couldnt speak directly to him. She just wanted to express how grateful she was to him. He responded something like: You dont have to say it. I can tell my looking into your eyes.
Then the woman started to tear up. Sorella Bair and I felt a tear or two too. It was such a tender moment to see these two people communicate through eyes, tears, and a tender hug. I love italian. Another phrase I have been really fond of lately is:
Che cose di bello ha fato oggi? (What beautiful things did you do today?)

Armani
Weeeee went to the MOST beautiful place in the world last p day. It is called Taormina and it is pretty much heaven on earth! UGH. There are hardly words nor pictures that can describe it! Oh my goodness. BREATHTAKING. That is all I can say. We saw a Greek Theater and beautiful views of the coast. There were the cutest little shops of touristy things and gelato. We went with a guy in our ward....who happens to look JUST like Spencer. Im still convinced that it is him. Is there something youre not telling me, spence? Wellll turns out I forgot to bring a jacket and it was super cold and windy (which is why we all wore pants). This guy, Giuseppe lent me his sweatshirt. First of all, I felt weird because hes a boy and Im a missionary. Second of all I just felt weird. Well after an hour or so of wearing it, Sorella Francom points out that I am wearing an Armani sweatshirt. Yep, that is in fact armani in those pictures. Im just a little jersey girl in the most beautiful spot in the world as a missionary, wearing a crazy expensive sweatshirt. What is my life?!
We visited a bunch of less-actives this week and some were more interesting than others. One lesson was in a pretty ghetto part of town. We got out of those lesson quickly so we could be out of there before dark. The sweet woman warned us to be careful. Literally on our way out the door, we see this chubby sweet little boy RUNNING at us with a jagged sharpened stick-weapon!! My first thoughts: he is an innocent little child. Second more crucial thoughts: he could really HURT us! WE went for it. Running and screaming down a ghetto street with this little boy coming after us. How is this real?? He gave up after a minute or so and we were free....nope. *OH NO. He is coming!!* We survived, dont worry. Lots of laughs that day.Monday, November 11, 2013
sono al setimo cielo
I am in 7th heaven (on cloud 9) Cute! right??
This week flew! Wow. I am shocked! So many more crazy adventures to share.
Pranzo with Sorella Casella
First of all, Italians really do get offended if you dont eat EVERYTHING they make for you. No need to worry, I was a good little girl and ate everything, although I felt like I could sleep for 20 years afterwards. We really were packing it all in, Haha. We went with one sister who could hardly finish her first course. Pretty sure, Sorella Casella asked us *So do you like it?* like 10 times and then whenever she had fear based on how quickly we ate our food or the looks on our faces, she would ask *So do you NOT like it??* It was ridiculous. One of the sisters was really struggling and even snuck her food onto another sisters place when Sorella Casella wasnt looking, but she noticed and jokingly shoved her fist to the sisters head. When fruit was served, we had the opportunity to self serve...so this one sister was definitely pleased. Sorella Casella glared at the sister, all three of us glanced over to see that she had placed one little pathetic piece of melon on her plate, and all burst into laughs. Sorella Casella told us that next time we should tell her what to cook. THAT was not even the problem. The food was amazing. HAha italians.
We had another appointment with Mr. Roman. It went pretty well. He has a short attention span, but we had some progress. He ended the lesson by giving us bracelets and telling us that we can never take them off, even when we go home to America. He also took our fortunes and told us that we would each live until we are 85 years old. Sorella Bair said *YES. and high fived me.* Then he looked at my hand, pointed to the freckle on my hand and made me kiss it. Then, based on that freckle, I would be RICH. If that wasnt weird and random enough, two seconds later I experienced a bird dropping on my foot. Twas a splendid lesson:)
Italian church. It is seriously the most interesting thing I have ever witnessed. There are a lot of issues with talking during sacrament meeting that have been addressed. I find it so funny. During relief society (since I dont understand a lot of whats going on) it will be peaceful at one moment and then the next it will burst into arguing and yelling (or what appears to be arguing). It just erupts out of nowhere.
Miracles are everywhere. We prayed for the bus to come on Saturday night and as soon as we ended our prayer, a bus had appeared. We asked the driver if he was going to Piazza Sanzio (where we would need to take another bus), he was not but he offered to take us ALL the back to our street! HAha italians are such kind people. Sorella Bair even taught him a lesson (as he drove). It was so awesome!
Although I am loving Italy, we are spoiled enough to have an American ward in our zone (at the military base) so we went to an American familys for dinner. It was such a treat to walk on real carpet and eat American food. There was such a strong spirit in their home.
Sorella Bair and I went to a chinese restaurant for lunch last week! It was such an interesting experience. We were the only ones in the restaurant because it was during Italian Pranzo when everyone goes home for three and a half hours. As we searched the menu, we began to hear a very familiar tune... that was none other than Back Street Boys. Aww yeah. But ohhh no. Were missionaries! They put on a whole american playlist, just for us. Haha. At that moment I realized how interesting everything was. We are missionaries in Italy, eating in a Chinese restaurant, and listening to American music. They even took our picture and put it on facebook. TAG ME. Haha scherzo.
We shared the three videos, Patterns of Light by Elder Bednar with some of our investigators this last week. They are powerful! I loved the last one. For the most part, it takes some time to get answers to our prayers (similar to a sunrise), but I loved how he said that you can always discern the light- meaning the Lord is always there beside you D&C 68:6. It is so true. At times, the things that we go through seem unending and impossible but we must understand that the Lord is always with us. He has a plan for each of us. He knows all. I know that prayer is so real. I have seen that more than ever since I have been here. God answers our prayers, always.
The work is tough, but we are loving it We tried committing Tina to baptism last week and she kept saying her usual, *Maybe* inserted into her italian sentences.... so we will see. Shes not real, but thats totally cool. I hope to send a video of her real soon. She is very interesting. The language is coming. Zone conference this week! sorella Price is in my zone, so I get to see her and we get to share our simple testimonies together!! Cant believe how fast time goes! I love you all! Have a wonderful week! Keep sharing the good word of God!

Halloween is Real in Italy
Ciao!!
Yes. Halloween is coming to Italy. Its only a matter of time. There were many windows decked out with pumpkins and halloween greatness, it always made Sorella Bair and me so happy. I dont think I have ever been as excited for a holiday.... especially when the Sigonella base (americans) gave us AMERICAN CANDY, too much in fact.
Halloween was so memorable. We met Mr Roman (the bangladash man) and taught him...after he sang to us in bangladeshian. When I told him Happy Halloween and explained that it was an American holiday, his response was priceless *Oh my goodness!!! Congratulations!* as I shooked both of our hands. Never, had that kind of response before. (Maybe for Independence day, but I guess Ill take it for this holiday too haha)
Mr Roman is the most interesting man. He just loves life as he sells his hand made bracelets on the streets while wearing the same shirt with a Mary Poppins outline on the front. He wants to meet with us every week.. we have suspicion that it is only for friendship, so we will see.
We taught Rosario and Valeria again this week! They are so golden but they are not ready to commit to baptism yet. We wnated to have a powerful lesson where we could somehow bring up baptism but also where we could establish a good relationship with them. I prayed so hard that I would be able to understand and communicate with them. 10 minutes before the lesson I had the idea to not even mention baptism until our next visit (so as to not scare them off), but to leave them an impegno (commitment) to read 2 Nephi 31. It sounded perfect.
Everything went so well!! They were really receptive to the lesson and I could understand them for the most part, and then I gave them the chapter to read. (totally not expecting them to flip to the chapter) Well they did. And the first line of the intro was *Gesu fu battezzato*. It was so obvious! Hahah my reasoning behind it was that this chapter would help us build our faith like the Brother of Jared (who we were just teaching about). All is well though!
Ingrid Alvez, a less active woman took us to see castles and volcanic rock on Halloween! It was so beautiful!! Oh and apparently it was the spot where the story of Cyclops originated. Best halloween adventure ever. YES. There are volcanoes in italy. The closest is Mt Etna. I definitely plan to make my way there eventually! Sister alvez loved soakig in the peace of nature. She loves just pondering in nature! It was so inspiring. Gods creations are so pleasant and peaceful.
There was a halloween festa for the ward! I made orange rice krispie treats topped with orange and brown m&ms...fancy I know. Haha. No but seriously. They were the hit of the night. I had so many italians coming up to me, asking for the recipe. Haha who woulda thought the easiest dessert in the world would have been the first treat gone at an italian party?? Thanks mom.
Saturday night we had an interesting appointment planned. Sister Francom described this womans house as the most atrocious thing she ever laid eyes on. She warned us about the horrible things and food that we might be served. I kind of dreaded it all day long. We giggled on the way over about how we would deal with it. I prayed to have a love for this woman, Sister Maiori, even though her home was so nasty.
Yes, the entrance way was the scariest thing I have experienced in a while and her home was very dirty, but this woman was so kind. It was a very humbling experience as she asked us to sing hymns with her. The first hymn she suggested was Because I Have Been Given Much. I was overcome with emotion. This woman who has next to nothing and a bedridden husband, has asked us to sing this song. This woman opened my eyes to God and how grateful I am for life and for the gospel. Although this womans home was very dirty and poor, I felt such a special Spirit as this woman shared her testimony and the miracles she has been blessed with. It was so touching. God is so wonderful! and the Saints are so strong here!
Okay. There are four things I have learned as a missionary.
1. so much running required!
2. days ARE SO COLORFUL AND NEW
3. times flies faster every week
4. Miracles are everywhere.
I am so grateful to be here. I love the work! I love the Lord. I know that Christ lives.
Love you all!

Somewhere over the rainbow..
Like I said, the more south you go, the crazier it gets. We taught a crazy woman the other night. She is less active because she is still angry with her sisters and her daughters,.... thus she hates the church (or at least the members). She went off on a rant and said some scary words that (thank goodness) I did not understand... There was one tension filled moment where she turned to me and sang *Somewhere over the rainbow* IT was so uncomfortable and weird.
Okay I want to talk more about the culture! Everything is so new and different here. Okay the people, for one thing, are so open! They tell it like it is. They tell us their feelings, they show emotions like no other! They look at our nametags while on the bus or walking through the city streets and ask what they mean. They ask if we are mormon and what we believe.
Okay the food is amazing. Apparently Sicily has amazing food! I tried my first cannollo (cannoli- pluralized). It was a dream in a roll with ricotta cheese. It was so amazing. There is so much fried food here, it makes me so nervous. Sicily missionaries are known for gaining the pounds. Grrrreat.
Italians use their hands to communicate! It is the funniest thing. I have found myself putting my hands together and shaking them one or twice. It is so interesting! Dad, we have had a couple drivers shake their hands at us. I couldnt help but think of the time you experienced the same. It felt so great.
The weather is HOT! Its humid. Nothing like provo.
Scenery is beautiful. We live on the coast with the beautiful ocean view and palms outisde our balcony.
PEOPLE BOTCH HERE. Bacciare means to kiss. They kiss european style on the cheeks. It is the sweetest thing. I have probably botched like 100 times already (with women of course) However, if a man tries to botch you and they are not aware of the rules, you are just supposed to let it happen and then tell them the rule. I BOTCHED AN OLD MAN. SO WEIRD.
Okay I met some wonderful investigators last week, Rosario and Valeria. They are the cutest young couple who have been investigating for about a year. They are so sharp and their testimonies of the gospel are so strong! It was so nice to meet some normal young people interested in our message. They love the scriptures, they are just struggling with some word of wisdom problems. They are so close! Apparently they had set a date, but still struggled with smoking so it never happened.
Finding: We dont do a whole lot of finding here- mostly because there are so many less actives! Apparently there are 700 people in our ward, but only 100 people come! So sad! We have done finding a couple of times. We hand out flyers for the church about our free english course. It is an awesome and effective way to strike peoples interest and then they ask who we are. We teach a free english course twice a week and share a spirtual thought at the end.
Antonio, the funny italian man who always speak english to us was at english course last week. AFter corso di inglese we began putting the chairs away. He refused to let Sorella Bair and me do so. He took the chairs from us and then said forcefully *No no no. I am a MAN* HAha it was great.
I recently came across Elder Hollands *Lord I believe* talk from last spring. Many times we have doubts. In fact, we all have doubts. I have doubts with my ability to communicate or comrephend the people. Rosario and Valeria struggle with the Word of Wisdom, Tina has doubts about receiving revelation; however, we must lean on the belief that we do have and pray for help! *Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief* We ALL have doubts so we need to pray to overcome them and lean on the fait hwe do have! *Hold fast to what you already know and stand strong until additional knowledge comes* I love that. All we need is a little faith, so when we face opposition and trials in life, we need to hold strong to our faith. That is SO important. I am definitely struggling with the language and being able to connect with the people, but it is so important that I hold on to my faith and trust that I can overcome. We should not let our doubts stand in the faith of our faith. *Be not afraid, only believe*.
Service is so wonderful! I truly know that through service to Gods children, we can find the greatest joy! We taught english to an italian girl the other day and shared a spiritual thought and she was so grateful and receptive to it! It is so great to make people so happy! I know that this will be the most joyous time thus far in my life. I am so excited to embark on these experiences.
Love you all! Grazie veramente!!

Italy is real. say what.
I am in the middle of an incredible Mediterranean island. What is my life? The name of my area is Catania, Sicily. We are in the boot of Italy. I am going crazy. It boggles my mind how different life is here. Okay first things first. I cant use apostrophes so dont judge me:) or I prob can but I cant find them! :)
I have the most wonderful companion in the world, Sorella Bair. She is seriously so kind and patient and beautiful and sweet. She is so sweet and likes to laugh a lot. She is so perfect for me. I feel so blessed! We live with two other sorelle in a huge apartment. OH and the best part is we have the most incredible view outside our balcony. I feel like I am living a dream. Outside our window are palm trees, beautiful italian buildings, and THE OCEAN. YEP. We get to experience the incredible sunrise every morning at 630. That is probably my favorite sight so far! We went running on my first morning and I just stared at the sunset the whole time. We then spotted 3 different cruises... I freaked out. *Okay so those are people vacationing here.....and I LIVE HERE. Like seriously. This ocean is pretty much my backyard* WOW. Sicily is incredible. UGh I which I could paint a picture for you and explain everything.
We were in Rome for one day where the assistants drove us through Rome for about a half hour. Sorella Price and I were snapping pictures like crazy because...I was in Rome. Haha. And I wasnt sure if I would ever serve there or not.
Jet lag was the worst thing ever, but Im surviving.
Okay I constantly feel like I am in a movie. We have met some pretty interesting italians so far. So first. I had my first lesson with Sorella Bair on day one in Siciliy. It was this old woman named Tina. She is old and crazy. Apparently, the further south you go in Italy the more crazies you will find. Turns out, I am in the most southern part. WOOHOO! Love it.
Okay Tina was very interesting. Sorella Bair asked me to give the opening prayer. Well turns out my italian isnt the fastest that it could be, so Tina stops me halfway through my prayer *its okay. you can say it in english* ..I continued with italian. Hah so awkward. Then we watched Finding Faith in Christ and then she went on this rant of what we choose to use our tithing for. She didnt understand why we didnt use all of it for poor people (why we used it for building churches and temples). Well, for those of you who dont know.. We do use tithing for humanitarian aid. She was pretty much yelling at us..or maybe to us. Haha apparently she got in a fight with a member last week about the same topic. Then when we asked her to finish the lesson with a prayer, she said multiple catholic prayers (to spite us). Yay. Oh, but she was sure to send us home with some delicious yet fried goodies:) Hahaha typical italians.
There is another man who is investigating with the Anziani (oh by the way. We have the largest district. We have four sorelle and four anziani) His name is Antonio. He was at FHE the other night. He has been learning english, so insisted on speaking english with us. When I would respond in italian (bc I am trying this SYL thing), he would be disappointed haha. HE WAS NOT EVEN REAL!!!! OH MY GOODNESS. He seriously seemed like your stereotypical italian actor in a movie!!! WIth the italian accent and everything! OH IT WAS SO FANTASTIC haha. Apparently he is trying to learn about the United States because its his dream to go there. He couldnt remember the capital of NJ (he is trying to learn all the capitals) When we said goodbye, he agreed to research more about my state when I saw him the next week. Haha
We were in centro for a lesson with the Anziani and on our way home, a man on a motorcycle popped out of nowhere! It was Antonio! It was so random and hilarious. He said he would give us a ride but knew that it was against the rules. He reminded us to keep our bags close to our bodies and then we said Ciao. He shook our hands again and then in perfect english said *It is very nice to meet you!* in his amazing totally stereotypical italian accent. Hahhaa I died.
Speaking of laughing at his accent, people are probably totally making fun of me for my horrible italian. Hahah I seriously feel like such a baby. It is so frustrating, but I am learning quick! A lot quicker than the MTC. It is awesome! Actually Sorella Bair is really impressed with my italian (my grammar). She has made several comments about it, but that could just be her really really sweet side. I had to share my testimony in sacrament meeting. She said that sisters typically share one sentence (and yet I was prepared to give about a paragraph or so:) teehee. Well I gave my testimony and I happened to say *soffrito* (fried) and the woman sitting nearby scofffed *HEH soffrito!* (kinda an obnoxious mean lady) and I quickly corrected myself *sofferto* Meno male! (thank goodness). I prayed that I would have the Spirit with me as I did so I and really think I did. Sorella Bair and many members were so impressed with my italian. One lady could not beleive I had been here only three days *it seems like you have been here for two months!* WOOHOo. I still feel frustrated (I can understand the missionaires, but the italians speak so quickly! Its crazy!)
ITALIAN SINGING! The funniest thing ever. They totally just go for it during church hymns. They seriously just make up the music as they go (tone deaf, attempted operatic voices, and holding notes longer than necessary). RELIEF SOCIETY was probably the craziest thing I have ever experienced. No more sweet, simple American lessons. When people gave comments, they GAVE comments. They were so passionate as they yelled and spoke with their hands. Also, there could be five women speaking (yelling) at once.
There is an army base in our area called Sigonella. Sooooo we get to go to a english ward as well. So I experienced something very different in relief society later that day. Six sweet, quiet women in a room who teared up. It was somewhat refreshing for me:)
ITALIANS ARE SO OPEN! We did some finding the other day. Yes, I did in fact. Well I said about three phrases and then handed it over to Sorella BAir. They are so open and willing to talk to us. (people we just met in a park or a bus) I was amazed!!! They even ask questions! Ive heard, the further south you are in italy, the most open they are. But seriously, they will ask what our beliefs are. It is awesome.
We have so many investigators (well some have been investigating for about a year) but still! We are teaching lessons! It is so great!
Also, the Waddoups have a blog- search for something like President Waddoups Italy Rome mission. There may or may not be some pictures up from our first night! And I may or may not look very jet lagged and gross:)
Much love!
Sorella Clyde

Much love!

Last post in the MTC!
Can I just say that I am SO ready for airport contacting time!! We roleplayed our airplane conversations yesterday. We rocked it. Okay, don't get cocky. It was great though:) We're praying to meet some italians on our Frankfurt to Rome flight.
Salt Lake
CHicago
Frankfurt
ROMA!
BEST BIRTHDAY EVER!!
Yes! the package came on time!!! IT's A BIRTHDAY MIRACLE!! THank you for all the goodies and notes and STICKS (ken) loved them! So cheesy and perfect. Another birthday present: I got stitches!! WOOHOO! Can cross that one off my bucket list! Yes, I have a mole on my arm that has started to change in the last week....so now it's gone. and 2 stitches have taken it's place. I know gross. I'm sorry, but I feel so hardcore. I keep looking at it.
We had another lesson with Luigi on my bday. I told him how it was my birthday and he was overjoyed. In fact, he stood up as soon as I told him (I was thinking....oh no. what's happening now. Is this another weird ritual or something?) Turns out, he was prepping himself to SING for me. Yep, he sang a fantastic happy birthday to me in italian with the hand gestures, italian vibratto/accent and everything. I died. Seriously made my birthday.:):) ALSO...during language study we experienced a fun little firework show outside our building. Such a fun treat.
Last week!! We helped demonstrate teaching for the newbie missionaries!! It was a great learning opportunity....to see how we can teach in English. Turns out, I never learned how to teach in english. Hahah nah, it was great!! I definitely learned a lot- especially when put in front of a really sassy Hawaiian lady who rejected every question I asked her. So feeling a little nervous (i guess), when I wanted to tell her of the gospel joy of families, the first question that came to mind was "So do you have family? Do you have parents?....." (Oh no. Hopefully she thought I meant "Are her parents still living?".....Nope, she spit back some sassy comment of course, "Nah. I was just a test tube baby." Hahha yay. 4 weeks into the mtc and I have all the newbies laughing at me. Wow, fantastico. Our other lesson went a lot more smoothly. I always have fears when I see other missionaries look at me and I automatically assume they were in that classroom with me that day. Okay, it's fine. Sister Price and I still laugh about it.
General conference was incredible. The MTC is the most spiritual place. I am amazed, but the Spirit last weekend was stronger than it has ever been. I loved all the talks on missionary work! Elder Ballard especially! I love how he said something like "Everytime you bring someone's hand to Christ's hand figuratively, you WILL feel the love of the Lord for you and for that person." SO TRUE.
One talk that really stood out to me was Elder Edward Dube. Wow. "Faith always points to the future!!"
Read Helaman 5. Own it, study it, love it.
The Mtc is such a fantastic place. I am incredibly amazed by the things I have learned here and the growth I have had. I am so grateful everyday!! I love you all so much!!
SEEK TO FIND THE ONE! Take Elder Ballard's challenge to share the gospel with at least one person from now until Christmas and millions will receive the blessing!!
Love you all! Arrivederci!

In bocca allupo!!
In other words: Good luck!! It translates to "in the mouth of the wolf".
That is how italians say good luck. Don't ask. It's kinda like "Break a
leg!"
This last week went so quickly! I am amazed at how the MTC is flying. I have 12 days. Next P-day I will talk to you about calling from the airport!
Yes, it's true my face was not shown on screen in the Relief Society meeting. I guess Steve must have zoomed in a ton to find me. Turns out, the cameramen decided not to show ONE part of the choir. Yay:) I was pretty bummed when we watched in at the devotional, but I just felt so grateful to have been part of this incredible opportunity. Wow there are hardly words to express the Spirit there that night. I felt an incredible amount of peace as we watched the whole conference center fill with beautiful women of the church and then to see President Monson walk into the room. Complete peace. I felt so grateful for the opportunity to bring these beautiful messages through music to the world. It was an unforgettable expereince to see apostles of God as I am a missionary for the church. Before the meeting started, a sister sitting next to me said "How cool is it that we get to see the back of President Monson's head? I mean when do you ever get to see the back of his head. Not in general conference...not in pictures." HAHHA yep, she had a great point.
The Anziani in our zone made a comment how great it is that President Monson always uses "closed quotes" and how they hope to count how many times he does so this weekend. My challenge for all of you for the week!
The latest devotionals have been fantastic! One member of the MTC branch presidency spoke about the importance of having daily, sacred devotionals with the Lord at 10:15. Through this, we would have even greater success on the mission. It was such a profound idea. It made me realize how the Church of Jesus Christ is all centered on the ability to PONDER. It is such a fantastic tool that we have in receiving revelation. It is was what we teach our investigators. The mind is a powerful tool, so we must use it how God would have us use it. Dad, thank you for that amazing article on the control and power of the mind and how we can expand our knowledge. So fascinating!. The gospel of Jesus Christ is a gospel of pondering. When we ask thought-provoking questions in lessons, we are simply helping investigators to know how to ponder. It is something that I hope to really strive for!
Last night a member of the Seventy spoke to us: Elder Baxter about the Mormon church compared to all other christian churches. It was so great. He used biblical references that clearly show that our beliefs are true regarding the Godhead, how we believe we can become like God, and how we do not remember Jesus Christ by the cross but by the resurrection. The Atonement is such a powerful and beautiful knowledge that we have. The idea that Jesus Christ suffered and paid for all of our sins. I am so grateful for the gift of the Atonement. I know that it blesses our lives everyday!.
Elder Baxter and his wife are converts to the church. At the end of his talk he talked to us as if we were the missionaries who contacted him. It was POWERFUL. Wow. I got emotional as he stated "Thank you. I will never forget you. I cannot repay this debt to you." He then mentioned how because of this, he was able to be married in the temple and have many kids who have gone on to have eternal families of their own.
By small and simple things, are great things brought to pass. In district meeting we discussed how we have no idea of the effect we can have on people. Through knocking on this man's door, great things came to pass! I was reminded of that time when the family was really into doing missionary work several years back. I drove to the gas station one day with Kennas car (which had a utah license plate). The man who pumped my gas (yes, NJ people don't pump their own gas), asked if I was Mormon since I was from utah. I replied yes and never took the opportunity to invite this man. The next week I intentionally drove back on that saturday morning to see him working there again! I prayed that he would fill up my car and he did. I then took this great opportunity to ask if he would like to talk to the missionaries. He said....No. I drove home in failure. When my mom made me tell the missionaries the next day, I reluctantly did so. I will never forget the words of Elder Call, "The success is in the invitation." I took from that, to be BOLD. Talk to everyone. Family and friends. All we are expected to do is invite! That is our purpose as missionaries, as members "Invite others to come unto Christ". You never know what effect you will have on someone. Like that woman from Short Hills.. she had 6 or 7 different run-ins with Mormons. We never know, but God knows. We just need the faith to try, to invite. Great things will come to pass!
The italian is going well! I am learning the doctrine more than I ever have! Everyday I am fascinated by the things I learn from my teachers. We love our teachers! They each contribute something we need. Luigi has a baptismal date. He prayed at the end of the lesson and called us angels. It was so sweet.
I accidentally wrote in Fratello Mortenson's PMG the other day. When I realized the mistake, I told him, "Um I have a problem.... I wrote in your PMG......in pink and light blue pen." Couldn't find my regular pen that day). Fratello Mortenson being the gem that he is, made me sign it. He is so sweet. We seriously could not have asked for better teachers.
Fratello Mortenson is the most fantastic actor ever. He is Luigi and he is the most perfect little italian man ever. He hunches his back over and talks very quickly with a sllurred accent. When Sorella Price showed her picture of the Plan of Salvation and we pointed out the part of our life on earth. (there was a pathetic picture of an earth). He asked "Where is Italy?" (refferring to the earth) He then drew it in for us. HAHA
Also when the the Anziani were teaching him about Tithing. He then pulled a 20 dollar bill out of his pocket and tried to give it to them. Hahha tricky little Fratello Mortenson.
Life is so great!. I feel so happy here!! love you all so much! Be nice to Maisy!!
Love,
